Published on ocula.com, 18 March 2016 When Sydney art dealer Ray Hughes visited Swiss collector Uli Sigg at his Mauensee residence near Lucerne some years ago, a mutual friend asked the dealer how the visit went. ‘Did you feel comfortable and find a place to kick your feet up and read?’ ‘No,’ answered Hughes, ‘it … Continue reading →

Janine Antoni’s ‘Loving Care’ (1992) performance saw the artist paint the exhibition’s floor space by dipping her hair in Loving Care hair dye–eventually forcing the audience out of the space– using her body as an instrument of art to explore notions of power and ‘femininity’ #janineantoni #womenartists #performanceart

La mulți ani, Constantin Brâncuși!・・・ #regram @lablouseroumaine @brancusiweek Constantin Brâncuși, the father of modern sculpture was born on this day In 1876 in the village of Hobiţa, Gorj, near Târgu Jiu, close to Romania's Carpathian Mountains, an area known for its rich tradition of folk crafts, particularly woodcarving. Geometric patterns of the region are seen in his later works. Brâncuși has been credited with paving the way for everything from mid-century abstract art to the postwar minimalists. #Brancusi #ConstantinBrancusi #bornonthisday

Lucifer Rising on viagra. Standing before Pamela Rosenkranz’s Viagra Paintings installation, consisting of large paintings-in-action and paint splattered debris, including a box of viagra. The artist took the male virility drug while painting these panels. The installation suggests movement and energy, and also plays on the idea of action paintings as a masculine endeavour–large paintings full of gesture, power, and aggression. The drips and viscosity of the paint are suggestive of bodily fluids–they’re quite ejaculatory–yet the colours also call to mind flesh and sensuality, melted makeup and blushing. Both hard and soft, synthetic and organic, aggressive and tender. The work is part of Tai Kwun’s fantastic new group show Performing Society: The Violence of Gender, curated by Susanne Pfeffer. So many powerful, moving, challenging and great works in this exhibition. It runs through HK Art Basel week and is a must see! My fave HK show in a while. The jacket, btw is from LA counterculture icon, occultist and filmmaker, Kenneth Anger, who did the film Lucifer Rising.
